Throughout the month of January, Productive Edge employees competed in a friendly food drive competition in our second annual PE Hunger Games! PE coordinates this annual donation drive to help not only foster teamwork among employees outside of their normal work groups but also to give back to the local community. The donations were later picked up by Pacific Garden Mission (PGM), a homeless shelter in the Near-West Side of Chicago.
In total, 40 boxes of food and clothing were gathered to donate to the cause. Items that were donated to the Mission are then used for day-to-day operations in their kitchen as well as distributed to people in need. PMG serves three meals a day, 365 days a year, and also provides shelter for those seeking overnight accommodations. It is also the country’s oldest operating gospel mission with a goal of restoring the lives of homeless men and women in Chicago. They offer programs to help recovering addicts reclaim their lives, as well as provide spiritual programs to anyone living in their facilities.
PE employees were split into five teams with the goal to fill the most boxes with food and clothing items and a chance to win a team lunch. At the end of the collection period, donation amounts were close, but the winning team was victorious with 20 boxes! To end the competition, a group of volunteers went to the Pacific Garden Mission facilities to help serve dinner alongside the staff. They served a hearty meal consisting of BBQ chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans. Because of an impending snow storm, it was one of the busiest nights of the year serving close to 600 people!
